Here's a comprehensive list of what I look for when proofreading a piece. 

1. Misspelled words
2. Dialogue within quotation marks
3. Indented paragraphs
4. Apostrophes used correctly to show possession and for contractions
5. Unnecessary words and repetition - find and eliminate
6. Missing words
7. Subject and verb agreement
8. Varied sentence length with no run-ons or fragments
9. Correct comma and semicolon usage
10. Places to replace "be" verbs with active verbs
11. Misplaced modifiers
12. Awkward sentences
